Milwaukee Road converted several tenders into steam heat tenders. The Milwaukee Road was one of the biggest users of steam injection type air conditioners on passenger trains as well as heat. Among other things, this meant the need for lots of steam summer and winter. Heat cars helped augment the regular boilers on diesel and electric locomotives pulling passenger trains. The first two were #70 and 71. Number 72 was converted in 1953.
